Shea butter, also known as karité butter, is a cream-colored fatty substance made from the nuts of karité nut trees, which grow wild in West and Central Africa. It’s very thick, quite hard – with the texture of thick fudge – and has a distinctive earthy, even sheepy (!) smell. Originally, we planned our whole company around importing and selling pure shea butter from Ghana, as it’s such brilliant stuff. However, we realised many people find pure shea butter a bit un-user-friendly because of its hard texture and strong smell, so we decided to blend it with other ingredients to create lighter, more easily absorbed creams. That said, if you can handle warming it between your palms (or even on a plate in the microwave for a few seconds) before applying, you’ll find it brilliant for really dry, sore skin.
